Volunteering Jobs that Pay Off
Volunteering Jobs that Pay OffVolunteering Jobs that Pay OffCan working a job without a paycheck set you up for big bucks? Job seekers who took this route tell all.Volunteering is good for your soul, and it can also be good for your resume. Many in the ranks of the unemployed have sought out volunteer work to pass the time and remain active in the absence of a 9-to-5 daily assignment. And some of those volunteers have found, by design or serendipity, that donating time and skills to a charity can be a ticket to employment.Making such a transition takes planning. Job seekers who have leveraged charity work into full-time work, executives who zulauf ohne gewinnerzielungsabsicht organizations and job-search experts told Ladders that making the connection is not as simple as signing up to serve meals at the senior center. To turn volunteer work into employment requires a strategic decision about what organizations are most likely to help your career and what roles you can serve that will p ut you in a position to connect your volunteer service to full-time work, these experts said. But dont discount your passion for a particular cause or group, they cautioned. Combining a strategic appraisal of your options and your hearts desire can lead to a job that nourishes your income and your soul.Do what you knowHeres just one example After she was laid off in April of this year, Jane, a marketing professional in Massachusetts, thought long and hard about what she really wanted to do next.During college, she had done a work study and volunteered for the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. This summer Jane, who asked that herbei belastung name and other specifics not be used for this story, decided that animal welfare was her calling and went back to her MSPCA roots. The difference this time Jane saw volunteering at the agency as an opportunity to gain the experience and contacts she would need to secure paying nonprofit jobs.Jane approached the MSPCA about doing some pro bono marketing work. This move put her directly in front of the directors of marketing at the MSPCA agency she hoped might connect her to full-time work there or help her network to find another job. She never had the chance to test that tactic. She found her next job at a Web site focused on animal welfare through an online posting. While I was volunteering, I actually found the job online, said Jane. One of the people who I was volunteering with had worked at the company previously. I said, Hey, do you know anyone whom I can show my resume to? She said, Ill send it, and the rest is history.Jane volunteered at the MSPCA because she believed in the work it does, but she volunteered in a role that she could leverage in her job search, she said. Its why she volunteered for marketing jobs in the marketing department and not as, say, a kennel cleaner or dog walker.Choosing the right role for your charity work is key to connecting volunteer work to full-time work, sai d Rahul D. Yodh, an executive recruiter with Link Legal Search Group in Dallas. If you volunteer in a situation where you can utilize your day-to-day geschftlicher umgang skills, then I think its a great idea and a great way to further your career because youre essentially doing a job, not just sitting around. At the same time, youre building some contacts, and you never know where that will lead, Yodh said. If you can get a high-enough level volunteering position, then thats probably the best route to take.Leverage your networkVolunteering is the route Nate Towne traveled to a public-relations job in Wisconsin after relocating from Maine.Three years ago, Towne moved from Portland, Maine, to Madison, Wis. He found himself without a job or any business contacts in that part of the country. He decided to build his network by joining a local chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. Not long afterward, Towne realized that the organization was in dire need of volunteers to help judge entries for a regional PR awards program. The chair of the judging committee was also the PR director of Madisons largest advertising firm, Hiebing, and Towne figured volunteering was a way to demonstrate his skills to a von rang figure in his profession.I realized, What better chance will I have to demonstrate my skills in a PR setting than to actually work with people who are already employed at some big agencies and at big hiring companies here in Madison and around Madison? Towne said. I can show them a.) that Im willing to roll up my sleeves and work for no pay and b.) that Im a smart person who gets things done and has some opinions about how things should be done. As luck would have it, Hiebing was hiring. I was the first one called because they had already worked with me, Towne said. He was hired as public-relations counselor at Hiebing.Choose your charity carefullyBoth Jane and Nate were strategic about choosing the organizations they volunteered for and the services they provided to those organizations. But thats not to say that you will easily have your pick of nonprofits, especially when you are offering up a specific set of business skills.Jane researched many nonprofit organizations, within and outside the animal-welfare area, and found that about half were interested in her marketing skills while half didnt really know what they could do with them.Organizations such as Volunteer Match.org and Idealist.org can help you find a good fit. The goal of VolunteerMatch, based in San Francisco, is to help nonprofits reach their mission through effective volunteering, said Robert J. Rosenthal, VolunteerMatchs director of communications. The range of volunteer activities that are posted at VolunteerMatch really represents the spectrum of national and community service activities in this country, and that includes unskilled and skilled labor, he said. As a result, a huge percentage of people who do volunteer work as a strategy for career development a nd promotion are finding their opportunities in places like VolunteerMatch. It is hard to say how many people are volunteering as part of their job-search strategy the recession and unemployment have resulted in a rise in volunteers and volunteer hours, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Sixty-one million Americans volunteered in 2008, one million more than the previous year, according to the BLS. The increase is even more profound among the unemployed. More than 2.1 million unemployed workers volunteered last year, up from 1.7 million in 2007, a 23.5 percent increase. Statistics for 2009 wont be available until January 2010, the BLS said.Rosenthal said that, year over year, VolunteerMatch has seen a big jump in usage. We know that for the first six months of 2009, our numbers were substantially higher than the numbers for the first six months of 2008, both in terms of unique visitors and in terms of people actually finding something they were looking for and clicking on the button that says, I want to help. Still volunteeringNate Towne wanted to help even after he had found a paying job in Madison. Towne is currently volunteering for HospiceCare, both because he believes strongly in the work the organization does and because it gives him a chance to network and gain experience.I think volunteering is something important to do, and it helps round out my resume in the nonprofit sector, he said. I volunteer time in the gardens. Im doing non-business things, but Im doing it with a lot of business leaders here in Madison. In the end, any volunteer experience - no matter what your motivation going in - can be a valuable boost to your resume and can help you stand out from a growing crowd.Get as much as you can out of the volunteering experience, said Theo Stripling, program associate with Literacy Volunteers of Illinois. You never know when youre going to be presented with an opportunity. You may pick up another skill set along the way that makes you more marketable, and thats something thats very hard to do these days.

6 Steps Thatll Make it Harder for You to Give Up on Your Goals
6 Steps Thatll Make it Harder for You to Give Up on Your Goals6 Steps Thatll Make it Harder for You to Give Up on Your GoalsEven though I dont really follow basketball Ive been a super fan of John Wooden for a number of years. Wooden was the legendary coach of UCLAs mens team, who led them to ten NCAA national championships in a 12-year period (including a record seven in a row).A big part of Coach Woodens unparalleled success was due to his belief that success was an inevitable byproduct of doing the little things right. He didnt believe in huge action or silver bullets and instead focused on the process of becoming a better player and person. When you improve a little each day, eventually big things occur. Dont look for the big, quick improvement. Seek the small improvement, one day at a time, as the only way it happens. When it happens, it lasts. When I first read this quote it was like a punch in the mouth to me, because it was pretty much the exact opposite of how I had done thing s for such a long time. I was a classic couch to marathon type of person.I was that guy who didnt exercise for two years, and then Id get hit with a sudden burst of motivation and inspiration (probably from reading an article like this) and decide Im going to get in the best shape of my lifeSo Id get up off the couch and decide that Im going to groe nachfrage a marathon. And Id go out the first day and run 10 miles. And Id eat perfectly. And Id get to sleep early. And the next day Id do it again.Sounds great so far, right? But by the time the third day rolled around, Id be sore. And tired. And have other stuff to do. And Id eat poorly. So Id tell myself, This sucks. Why am I doing this? Im never going to do that again. And then Id wind up back on the couch. After years and years of trying (and pretty much always failing) with the big change approach, I finally abfluged doing the opposite- and actually succeeding Im hoping that I can save you some of this pain and show you exactly how t o build on small wins and have them turn into huge success. No matter what goal you have, what huge and amazing feat youd like to accomplish, the reality is that you can make it happen simply by taking these six steps. Its the little details that are vital. Little things make big things happen.John WoodenStep 1 Name Your GoalThis one is pretty easy because all you have to do is think about a big project or big idea thats looming in your mind.If youre not totally sure how to phrase it, just answer this question Whats that one thing that you really want to accomplish- yet it feels too big to tackle?Whatever immediately came to your mind when you read that question is probably what you want to focus on. So jot it down somewhere (because written goals are more effective). One other way to figure this out, is to think about that big thing that you really dont want to do, but you know you should, we all have a lot of theseThats the goal that youre going to accomplish, as long as you follow t he remaining five steps.Step 2 Set a Reasonable DeadlineI emphasize reasonable because many times, especially when were feeling really motivated and inspired (think New Years resolutions), we can be a little over zealous with our deadlines. For instance, we may look at something that we know should take about five months, yet we say, This should only take three weeks. And we start off super strong, but then we dont get anywhere close to hitting our deadline (our goal) because it was completely unrealistic. As a result, instead of building upon our success, we feel like a failure because we didnt even get close.Thats why you need to set a reasonable deadline, whatever reasonable is for the particular goal you have.Step 3 Break it Down (Work Backwards)For this step, youre going to work backward in time.Break your goal down by weeks, months, quarters, whatever timeframes are necessary based on the goal itself and the deadline youve set- from the deadline backward until today. The second ha bit in Dr. Steven Coveys* The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Powerful Lessons in Personal Change is to Begin with the end in mind. The reason this works, as Covey explains, is that its ...based on imagination- the ability to envision in your mind what you cannot at present see with your eyes.So consider your final goal and break it down into smaller goals, working backward from when you intend to achieve it, to where you are today.Step 4 Answer the When? and What?Once you have your goal broken down from the deadline to today, the next step entails deciding the when? and the what?- as Neil Fiore explains in Awaken Your Strongest Self, ...back-time from the deadline and, moving down the page, write in each week or month until you come to today. Then ask yourself, When can I start today? On what part will I start? Two simple but powerful questions- When can I start today?- On what part will I start? As Fiore explains, youre essentially creating a clear path to the goal. Youre dictati ng the exact steps necessary to make your goal a success. The purpose of this is so your mind can start working on the goal positively instead of being worried about whats happening and all of the action youre not taking. Now is when youre going to start getting specific. What exactly are you going to do in order to reach your goal?Step 5 departureThe fifth step is simply to start putting your plan (your when and what) into action.Dont worry about how efficient you are or anything like that because it doesnt matter how great (or not great) you are at whatever it is you are doing, its all about starting. In the words of author Steve Pressfield, departure before youre ready. It doesnt matter how long you work on it, just start. Take some type of action, whatever that action is.Step 6 Bring it to the PresentThe next and final thing you want to do is maintain that action, that motion, that momentum.Fiore says to simply ask yourself, When can I start again?By breaking your goal down into all of those different parts and bringing it back to today, youre moving it to the present. As Fiore explains, Youve just created a mental image of a project that spreads out into the future, like steps toward your goal, but also returns your mind to the present where your body can release its energy and start working. Then, instead of your mind wasting all of this energy thinking about what youre not doing, its able to actually focus on doing whatever it is you need to do.Just take one step. Then another. Then another.More From Inc.15 Questions You Should Ask Every Time You Start a New ProjectThe Best Way to Tackle a Massive Project Is to Start Right NowWhich to Do First Small Task or Big Project?

5 career lessons from Shark Tanks Daymond John on running a business
5 career lessons from Shark Tanks Daymond John on running a business5 career lessons from Shark Tanks Daymond John on running a businessFUBU apparel CEO and Shark Tank Judge Daymond John got his start as an entrepreneur by mortgaging his mothers house in Queens for $100,000 and turning it into a clothing factory. But as he partners with eBay for National Small Business Week, he says he definitely wouldnt advise new entrepreneurs to go the way he did.John talked with Ladders about the lessons hes learned over the course of his 30-plus-year career in business.Dont take crazy risksI would say dont mortgage the house for $100K, he told Ladders with a rueful laugh. Because I didnt realize what a stupid move I was making when I did that. It turned out for all the better, but knowing what I know now, I was very close to losing the house and everything I had.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and m oraStart smallYou dont need the five-year lease and the $20,000 website, John cautions. Short-term goals for new businesses should be building a very small community that understands who you are and selling to them and improving the trust you have. John recommends initially selling a very small scope of products, not trying to spread yourself too thin. Once you know your customer really well, then youll be able to duplicate that on a much larger scale. He knows from his own mistakes not to bite off mora than he can chew too soon When I first started with FUBU, like any designer, I wanted to make all colors to match all sneakers, he told Ladders. But customers didnt want every color Now knowing what I know, 60% of your sales are always going to be black, no matter what Now I know that my customer loved an extra large, so I would have not made small, and I know the most theyre going to pay is $29 for a screen-printed shirt, and the most theyll pay is $39 for an embroidered shirt. I did nt know all that initially and I had a large, large line and I had a whole bunch of inventory that I was sitting on I couldnt get rid of because I decided to over-commit.E-commerce means more information and controlJohn says that the fundamental difference between brick and mortar and e-commerce is how much intel you can get on your customers and how you can scale. You hit way more people with e-commerce even if you have an existing retail shop and your analytics often are a little more accurate because a retail shop, when a person comes in, you dont necessarily know if theyre buying it for themselves, their husband, for their wife, or its a special occasion. And unless you have a form where they can enter the data, when they leave, you dont know where they went. You dont know how to maybe get them back. When you are servicing on a digital platform such as eBay you can find who your customers are, you know their analytics, their demographics, you can email them, there are ways to ove r-service them You can hit people all over the world instead of necessarily in one small community.FUBU got into e-commerce between 1999 and 2000. We saw that it was a way to empower ourselves a little bit more. We did have 27 retail shops but if we were selling purely to a retailer, then if the retailer decided to discount it, we were powerless if the retailer decided to merchandise it next to a competitor or if they decided to just keep it in the back and not even bring it out because, whatever they werent paying attention, and again, we didnt know, we didnt have any data at all because theyre not going to give us the data on whos exactly shopping. They didnt even know the data on who was shopping at Macys, JCPenneys. We wanted to be a little bit more in control of our destiny, so we started to sell online.Dont give your product to your product away to friendsWell, listen, you give 10 t-shirts away to your friends or family Grandmas always gonna come back no matter how disgusting that shirt is and say Oh baby, everybody at my job loves it even though grandma and the people at the job hate it. But they dont want to hurt your feelings. But you get somebody who has a lot of different options and who are taking their hard-earned money out of their pockets and handing it to you theres proof of concept, thats why you see on Shark Tank. We always say, What are your sales? And you dont have to be selling $1 million, you can be selling something that is $10. But if I found out that you sold 50 of them in two hours because you decided to stand out on the corner and sell them, you have a million dollar absprache ahead of you Because if you dont know who your customer is, then youre taking my money and youre using it as tuition to find out who your customer is so, thats why you shouldnt give away anything, you gotta sell it first to see if you have a real viable product.Tell a storySmall businesses make it easy and attractive for people to buy from them if they create a narrative, John told Ladders. How are small businesses telling their story? he asked. People can buy from anybody and they want to know why theyre buying into your story. Many entrepreneurs, he said, have created their product out of fulfilling a need or a void in the market. So people want to support brands and products like that. One of my top companies on Shark Tank even taught me a lesson. Theyre a company called Bombas Socks I think they were doing like $800,000 in business when they first started, and now I think theyre gonna do about $100 million annually. And the reason why I feel this so great is, first of all, the product is king, the sock is really amazing, but more importantly, I think, every sock they sell, they give away a pair to the homeless because they know the homeless have a challenge caring for their feet and getting clean socks. That kind of give-back is important to consumers today and is an attractive story to support. I found that today, the consumer, they want to know that every single time they purchase something, theyre giving to a cause or something near and dear to them, or even not near and dear to them just something they know is going to help others so at the end of the year, they look at their 400 purchases and they say Listen, Ive donated money towards stopping human trafficking, Ive donated money towards saving animals, clean water, and homelessness. No matter who you are, you need to tell a story and you need to build your community around that story, and people will support you more whether its from a charitable side or whether youre making a really amazing product but youre not selling it at a high cost because you feel that a family needs to be able to afford this product. Retailers have to tell a story and then people will die to support them. I didnt put three sleeves in a shirt, I just made a t-shirt, but there was a story behind it and thats why people bought into it.You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 r ituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people
